Joe Dispenza
Meditation has a real, moderate evidence base for some symptoms, and Dispenza's group did publish an exploratory peer-reviewed retreat study, which keeps the score out of Hall of Shame. The score stays in the overstated band because interviews and book marketing promise mystical body change and biblical healings that the uncontrolled 20-person study cannot support, while company statements are more careful than the stage stories.
Editorial opinion: SG Score 42 out of 100. Verdict: OVERSTATED. This is not a customer star rating and not a finding by a court.

Strengths
- Meditation as a practice has moderate evidence for anxiety, depression, and pain, the kind of finding Goyal and colleagues reported in JAMA Internal Medicine and that ASBMB Today's Undark reprint summarizes (S3). That support is for meditation in general, not for supernatural healing.
- He has collaborated with UC San Diego researchers and coauthored a 2025 peer-reviewed observational paper (S4 S5). Publishing with academic coauthors is uncommon in this niche, even though the design is uncontrolled.
- The flagship book is a low-cost entry at about $20 (S1), so a reader can sample the ideas without a multi-thousand-dollar retreat.
Weaknesses
- The Daily Beast reports that retreat marketing pairs meditation with disease-cure testimonials, notes he is a chiropractor trained at Life University rather than a physician or neuroscientist, and records his early-2000s teaching at Ramtha's School of Enlightenment, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has described as a cult (S2).
- ASBMB Today's Undark reprint quotes the COO denying that Dispenza claims meditation cures cancer, while describing a retreat culture full of healing stories. Experts quoted there warn that attendees should not skip proven medical treatment (S3).
- Edzard Ernst argues that Dispenza's public reading of the 2025 study, calling it landmark and tying it to a future of medicine in thought, overstates an uncontrolled pre-post retreat study whose own authors are more cautious (S6).
Claims
fails. Readers of Becoming Supernatural can intentionally change brain chemistry to initiate profoundly mystical transcendental experiences and create a more efficient, balanced, healthy body through the meditations.
Meditation can shift brain networks, including default-mode patterns, in a limited and well-studied sense. The book sells that fact as a path to supernatural experience and a healthier body created by thought. Positive-fantasy research (R12 R13) and process-versus-outcome visualization (R41) cut against treating vivid mental imagery as a reliable way to produce health or life outcomes.
fails. His method produces healings of biblical proportions, including tumors disappearing, people leaving wheelchairs, and blind or deaf people regaining sight or hearing.
The company COO told Undark, reprinted by ASBMB Today, that Dispenza does not claim meditation can treat or cure cancer, while also saying the team follows evidence when it is presented and has met people who reported healings (S3). No controlled trial shows that his method cures cancer or restores sight or hearing. Testimonials are case stories, which Nick Van Dam, quoted in the Daily Beast, described as the weakest form of evidence (S2).
partly. His team's scientific research shows measurable body-mind changes, presented in marketing as support for the method and described by Dispenza as landmark work pointing to a future of medicine that exists in what we think.
The 2025 Communications Biology paper is a real peer-reviewed exploratory observational study of 20 healthy adults with no control group. Authors note limits including diet, fasting, and timing. Pre-post retreat changes cannot separate meditation from rest, travel, and expectancy. Ernst argues Dispenza's commentary runs well ahead of those methods (S6).
Public record
- 2001: SF Gate and later reporting place him as a teacher at Ramtha's School of Enlightenment in the early 2000s. The Daily Beast reports that the Southern Poverty Law Center has described that school as a cult. That is a historical association and a third-party description, not a court finding about Dispenza. S2
- 2004: Appeared in the film What the Bleep Do We Know!?, which helped popularize his quantum-consciousness teaching style. S2
- 2025-11: Communications Biology published an exploratory observational study of 20 healthy adults after a seven-day retreat. Dispenza is listed as a coauthor. The paper reports neural and molecular changes and notes limits, including no control group. S4
